Goodall Rescues Cockburn Yet Again as Swans Stumble in Quest for Finals Spot

Steven Goodall continued his brilliant form with bat in hand for Cockburn, making an unbeaten 73 to help his side to a total of 7/183 against Armadale at Gwynne Park as the final round of SMCA competition commenced on Saturday.

Goodall finished unbeaten for the fourth time in five first grade innings, hitting six fours and a six in his knock, the Cavaliers having been 7-102 at one stage and earlier 5-41 before a 81 run partnership between Goodall and Chris Scenini (29*) for the eighth wicket gave the visitors a more than respectable total. Paul Mirco also contributed 30 earlier in the day.

Damian Carroll and Mark Rice each took two wickets for the Demons, who will need to find form with the bat next week or risk missing out on a finals berth.

Their rival for fourth spot Bicton-Attadale had a disappointing day with the bat against Leeming Spartan at Fremantle Park, bowled out for 110 after winning the toss and electing to bat first.

Joshua Foster’s brilliant summer with ball in hand continued as he snared 6-28 for the visitors, including the key scalp of the inform Derryn Fernandez (34). Gavin Argent was the other multiple wicket taker with 2-15.

Leeming survived the 12 overs before stumps, reaching 0-21 with Matthew Milton on 12 Jonothan Page on 9.

Ben McGilvray’s second five wicket haul of the season helped his side Phoenix knock over East Fremantle over for 136 at Tempest Park.

The visitors were at one stage 6-43 as McGilvray and Rhet Bartley (2-18) ran through the East Fremantle top order, before Nick Siave (42) and Tyler Sorrell (31) revived the innings with a 64 run partnership.

McGilvray came back to clean up the tail and finish with his best first grade figures, giving Phoenix hope of a third win for the season next Saturday.

John Murphy hit 74 to help SJ Blues post a total of 149 at Karoonda Oval North, the visitors squandering a great opportunity to post a huge score having been 1-107.

Kris McShane took 6-44 to star with the ball for the home side, sending down 26.2 overs in total. Should CBC chase down 150 next week, they will secure the minor premiership and top position.

Ben Hills made a commanding 134 not out to help Willetton post 4-273 against Kelmscott at Centenary Park, his innings featuring 13 fours as he posted his second century of the summer.

Captain Aiden Sloan made 74 and Jatinder Singh hit 31, as the Crows aim to get off the bottom of the table with a win.

With Kelmscott facing an uphill battle to chase down 274 next week, Kardinya Lakes could be set to pounce on fourth spot as they put in a terrific first week performance against Maddington at Buzzacott Reserve.

The Bulls were bowled out for 152 batting first, Ejaz Ali top scoring with 44 and Brandon Aldersea contributing 33.

James Moore took 3-14 for the home side, Alex Newton claiming 3-68 and Jarrad King taking 2-38.

In just nine overs before the close Kardinya raced to 0-43, Mark Blinco’s good form continuing as he remained unbeaten on 31.

Riverton-Rostrata are still in the running for fourth spot as they declared at 8/187 against Kwinana at Riverton Park, Sean Harrison top scoring with 47, Richard Marshall making 36 and Derek Bland 32.

Richard Bell took 3-35 for Kwinana, Andrew Gibbs and Kurt Verdonk each claiming two wickets.

At stumps Kwinana are 2-40, Andrew Taya and Marshall with one wicket each.

The home and away season concludes for the SMCA competition across all grades next Saturday, March 10th.
